on an abstract but related note (leaders of large groups), wanted to post a new image…it’s a painting/retouching effort for a fund-raiser, using dick schulze, the founder of best buy, as the focus. final piece was professionally printed and framed for entry in a silent auction, benefitting a children’s charity.

what i don’t like about facebook
August 6th, 2007 //i’ve been a member of myspace for about 2 years now. and for the most part i’ve enjoyed the experience, small browser compatibility issues aside. i’ve found a lot of great friends, and made contact with people from my near and distant past, as well as stayed in touch with people that would otherwise be nearly impossible to do so.
myspace is sort of the 800-pound gorilla in the web 2.0 / social networking / etc room, among many other copycats and competitors, the next heaviest is probably facebook. facebook has been the site of choice for high school and college students the nation over, but for the life of me, i can’t figure out why; i seem to have problems and see missed opportunities in the service every time i log in.
let me start by saying that my facebook woes have been long-standing, starting years ago when it was still a relatively new site, and certainly below the radar of the general population. i had some friends who wanted me to join up, but alas, it was a completely closed service, available only to students with current school-issued email addresses. my problem as an alumnus of two different schools is that: a) my schools don’t–or didn’t then–offer email addresses. the internet was still too new for my small schools to be on the bandwagon. b) even if they were on the cutting edge at the time and offered addresses, it’s been years since i was a student, and most schools discontinue students’ addresses and web spaces a handful of months after they are no longer attending. so i was left in the cold outside this apparently walled city in the blustery wasteland of the web.
